From October 12, 2025 - new rules for entry and exit to the Schengen countries take place

З 12 жовтня 2025 року - нові правила в’їзду-виїзду до країн Шенгену

The new Entry/Exit Control System (EES) entry into force:

From October 12, 2025, in 28 countries of the Schengen area (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Portugal, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Malta, Luxembourg, Croatia, Liechtenstein) a new electronic entry/exit system (Entry/Exit System — EES) is coming into operation.

It will automatically record all crossings of the EU’s external borders by third-country nationals, including Ukrainians who enjoy a visa-free regime.

What is it?

EES is a modern digital database that replaces the usual stamps in passports.

When crossing the border, the system will read:

  • passport data (name, number, citizenship, date of birth);
  • date and point of entry or exit;
  • biometric data – fingerprints and facial photo;
  • information about possible refusals of entry.

Who is concerned

The EES applies to all third-country nationals entering the Schengen area for a short stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, regardless of whether they are travelling with a visa or without a visa.

Not subject to registration:

Citizens of the EU, EEA (European Economic Area: Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), Switzerland, as well as holders of long-term residence permits.

🎯 Why is this done?

  • prevent overstays (violations of the 90 / 180 days rules);
  • identify persons who have overstayed;
  • speed up border control and increase the accuracy of checks;
  • replace manual stamping of passports with digital registration.

💡 What Ukrainians need to consider

  1. The first entry after the launch of the EES may take longer, as you will have to take biometrics.
  2. The data will be stored for up to 3 years, and the procedure will be faster for subsequent trips.
  3. The system will automatically count the days of stay in Schengen – so it is important not to exceed the allowed 90 days.
  4. If you are planning a trip or applying for a visa, prepare documents in accordance with the requirements of the new system.

The full transition will take place gradually – by spring 2026.
