Registration of marriage with a foreign citizen abroad

Реєстрація шлюбу з іноземним громадянином за кордоном: що потрібно знати українцям

Registration of marriage with a foreign citizen outside Ukraine requires precise preparation of documents and their correct translation.

What documents are needed to register a marriage abroad

Depending on the country, the list of documents may vary slightly, but usually the following are required:

  1. International passport (and a copy of the internal passport for Ukrainians).
  2. Birth certificate.
  3. Certificate of marital status (or certificate of absence of registered marriage).
  4. Divorce certificate or death certificate of the previous spouse – if the person was previously married.
  5. Document confirming legal residence in the country of marriage registration (visa, residence permit, etc.).

All Ukrainian documents must be legalized (apostille or consular legalization) and officially translated into the language of the country where the marriage is concluded.

 Peculiarities of document processing

  • In EU countries, documents with an apostille and official translation by a certified translator are usually accepted.
  • In countries that are not parties of the Hague Convention, the procedure of full consular legalization may be required.
  • Some countries, such as Italy, Spain, France or Germany, require that documents be submitted to the local municipality (Comune, Ayuntamiento, Standesamt) in advance – sometimes several weeks before registration.

Why is a correct translation important?

Errors or inaccuracies in the translation may lead to a refusal to register a marriage or delay the procedure.
